The book entitled 'Munamadan' written by Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota describes the life of a poor society of the rural area of Nepal. The book was published in 2007 BS by Sajha Prakashan . Madan, the main and most important character of the book, represents all the youths of Nepal who has gone abroad to earn money or to earn their living. Madan is such a character who is compelled to go abroad as he is jobless because of the problems of unemployment and poverty. His newly married wife Muna is queen of love and sacrifice. She loves Madan a lot so she is very upset as she has to send him to Lhasa. Where there are lots of obstacles and risks.
But finally, she accepts all the challenges and stays in home with her mother-in-law who is old and weak. The story also shows the life of a poor woman who suffered much without her husband and later dies because of grief.
Madan goes to Lhasa but his journey isn't easy. He faces a lot of obstacles and difficulties during his journey. His friends leave him on the road and come back home saying he has died. Finally, he is rescued by a man who is considered to be of lower caste in Nepal. That is why it is said that man is said to great not by caste or race but by heart full of love and humanity. When Madan returns home after regaining his health he discovers that his wife is dead and becomes grief-stricken. Madan comes to realize that money is of no value at that point.
In the book Devkota has written about the biggest problems of the then Nepalese society. Just before his death in 1958 Devkota made his femous statement ," It would be alright if all my works were burned, except for Munamadan." It is the most commercially Nepali book ever published.
